Edit while you play
I'm pretty sure that for rpgmaker 2k/2k3 it's the actual editor that has to be patched for the game to be editable while in testplay.
An alternate way to do it would be creating a shortcut the rpg_rt.exe that allows you to run in testplay mode (see this tutorial of mine: http://www.rpgmaker.net/tutorials/109/), that way, you could open up the game in testplay mode first, then start up the editor to edit stuff while playing.

Missing Update History
I've seen yet another game with missing update history: http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/785/. Since there are this many games lacking their history, I'm surprised this bug wasn't noticed sooner.
